For Cohen's iconic song, "Bird on the Wire", I found two instrumental pieces from England imitating the nightingale. We begin with the anonymous lute duet, "La Rossignol", from Jane Pickering’s lute book (c. 1616), where the nightingale sings in melodious, sometimes repeated tones. In the middle of Cohen’s piece, "The Tuneful Nightingale", from John Playford's “The Dancing Master” (1718), is heard.
