The Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo Station and Shin-Osaka is the busiest high-speed rail corridor in the world. The intensive traffic here is like nothing you’ve seen, and far surpasses train frequencies seen on most American (and elsewhere) commuter rail services. With ridership above 400,000 passengers per day, the Tokaido Shinkansen is part of the nationwide Shinkansen network that operates bullet trains across Japan. The Tokaido Shinkansen was also the first high-speed rail line in the world, opening in 1964 for the Tokyo Olympics. The Tokaido Shinkansen offers three types of services: Nozomi (limited stop), Hikari (semi-fast), and Kodama (local), with different stopping patterns and overall commercial speeds.

The Nozomi offers the fastest end-to-end journey times, stopping at fewer stations and taking about 2.5 hours to travel between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. The Hikari is slightly slower, stopping at more stations and taking about 3 hours for the same journey. And the Kodama is the slowest, stopping at all stations and taking about 4 hours. All trains run on the same tracks and have similar comfort and amenities.

I traveled to the first station outside of the Tokyo area, Odawara, to take a quick look at the N700 Shinkansen operation at one of the (mostly) through stations. The parade of the high-speed trains over the 40 minutes that I was there was quite amazing.

のぞみは、エンドツーエンドの移動時間が最も速く、停車駅が少なく、東京と新大阪間の移動に約 2 時間半かかります。 ひかりの方が若干遅く、停車駅が多くなり、同じ行程で約3時間かかります。 そして、「こだま」が最も遅く、各駅停車で約4時間かかります。 すべての列車は同じ線路を走り、同様の快適さとアメニティを備えています。
東京圏外の最初の駅、小田原に行って、（ほとんどの）直通駅の一つで N700 系新幹線の運行をちょっと見てきました。 私がそこにいた40分間の高速列車のパレードは非常に素晴らしかったです。
