ALBERT LEE WEEK - Song 5 of 6 - 'On The Verge'.

My third and final song on this week’s show is simply one of my favourite songs ever, ‘On The Verge’ written by Hugh Prestwood.

Originally a huge Country hit for Collin Raye, I produced Albert Lee and Hogan’s Heroes’ version for the album ‘Like This’ in 2008. Albert’s vocal on that record is utterly beautiful and I always enjoyed singing backing vocals to it when we did it live.

But on this extremely special show with Albert in my band, and with him already having chosen his three songs to perform, I asked him if he wouldn’t mind if I did it as one of my three songs because I ‘needed’ to sing it! Of course, he was as gracious as ever.

And again, like with ‘Rad Gumbo’ in my previous post where I had imagined and then recorded a Dixieland Jazz band in the arrangement, the same thing happened with this song... I had always heard in my head this lush Latin/Mariachi-style arrangement towards the end of the song which wasn’t necessarily appropriate for Albert’s recorded version. This performance was my opportunity to finally realise my idea!

Still to this day one of my favourite songs I have ever performed live and hope to continue doing so when the time and gig is right. ❤️
