‘Abune a mire’ A Hidden History of Maybole by Fergus Sutherland

The Maybole Regeneration Project are hosting a series of Evening Talks to highlight the history and heritage of North Carrick. Historian Fergus Sutherland kicked the series off on the 9th March 2021. He showed us that the modern Maybole that we know today is the result of hundreds of years of development. For a long time it was a thriving market town and then a flourishing industrial centre but its history actually goes back much farther than that. This older history is largely hidden from us today but recent research has brought much of that earliest period into focus for the first time revealing the potential, true importance of the town and changing our fundamental understanding of its story and of the legendary ‘mire’.
