There are stories related to the Mampe Ganewatta Devalaya as well as the surrounding villages. This story and the stories that are being told are many. It is believed that this Devalaya was built by Prince Sembagabperumal alias Sapumal, one of his generals during the reign of King Parakramabahu VI. Legend has it that on his way to conquer Yapa Patuna, Prince Sapumal saw a mango forest at this place and rested for a few days. He has vowed to build a temple at this place if he leaves for Yapa Patuna. However, after the victory of the war, Prince Sapumal built a shrine to the god Kataragama at this place. Ganewatta Devalaya is a sanctum sanctorum. A few stone pillars, the foundation of an ancient temple, and a series of stone steps are a testament to the past. It is said that this was done by a man named Sembagapperumal. It is said in the Sannasaka that during the Kotte period, King Buwaneka VII handed over the village of Mampe as a village to a man named Sembagapperumal. Another source says that a village called Tamilduwa was also handed over to him. These Sannas say that Sembagapaperumal lived in the vicinity of Mampe Ganewatta Devalaya. The two Sannas inscribed in copperplate can still be seen in the Colombo Museum. This will give a better definition of who Sembagapperumal is. It can be said that Sembagapperumal who lived in Mampe “Ganewatta” was a ruler who lived in the kingdom of Kotte. It is also believed that the ownership of this devalaya belonged to the descendants of the warrior Sembagapperumal known as Prince Sapumal. The temple, which has been worshiped by the people since time immemorial, was once in Valbi. It was Somaweera Chandrasiri, the then Deputy Minister of Culture, who cleared the temple and turned it into a sacred place. He started the Perahera in 1949 by renovating this place. Since then, the Esala Perahera at the Ganewatta Devalaya has been held in grand style with the assistance of philanthropists and residents of the area.

කෝට්ටේ රාජධානි සමයට අයත් හය­වන පරා­ක්‍ර­ම­බාහු රාජ සමයේ එතු­මාගේ සෙන්ප­ති­යකු වූ රණශූර සෙම්බ­ග­බ්පෙ­රු­මාල් හෙවත් සපු­මල් කුමා­රයා විසින් මෙම මාම්පේ ගණේ­වත්ත දේවා­ලය ඉදි­ක­ර­න්නට ඇතැයි විශ්වාස කෙරේ. අතීත කතා අනුව යාපා පටුන ජය ගැනී­මට යන ගම­නේදී සපු­මල් කුමා­රයා විසින් මෙම ස්ථානයේ අඹ වන­යක් දැක දින කීපයක් නවාතැන් ගත් බවති පසු කලෙක යාපාපටුන ජය­ගෙන පැමි­ණ කත­ර­ගම දෙවි­යන් උදෙසා මනරම් දෙවො­ලක් ඉදි­ක­ල බවත් පැවසේ. අතීතයේ සිට පවතින ඉපැ­රණි බෝධීන්වහන්සේ නමක් අදටත් දේවාග භූමියෙහි විරාජමානව වැඩ වෙසේ. ගල් කණු කිහිපයක්, ඉපැරණි දෙවොලයෙහි පාදම, ගල් අත්තිවාරම, ගල් පඩි පෙළක් මෙහි යටගියාව පිළිබඳ කියාපාන කදිම සාක්ෂි සාධක වේ. එමස්ම කෝට්ටේ යුගයේදී සත්වැනි බුවනෙක බාහු රජු විසින් සෙම්බගප්පෙරුමාල් නැමැත්තෙකු හට ගම්වරයක් ලෙසින් මාම්පේ ගම පවරා දී ඇති බව සන්නසකින් කියැවෙයි. තවද දෙමළ දුවේ නම් ගමක් ද ඔහුට පවරා දුන් බව පැරණි දේවාල තඹ සන්නසෙහි කියැවෙයි.

අනා­දි­මත් කලක සිට ජනයා විසින් පුද පුජා පව­ත්වන ලද දේවා­ලය කෝට්ටෙ රජධානිය බිදවැටීමත් සමග වල්බිහි වී ගිය අතර සංස්කෘතික උප ඇම­ති­ව­ර­ය­කුව සිටි සෝම­වීර චන්ද්‍ර­සිරි මහ­තා විසින් එසේ තිබූ දෙවොල යළි එළි­පෙ­හෙළි කර පුද බිමක් බවට කරනු ලැබීය. ගනේවත්තේ අසිරිමත් පෙර­හැරක් පැවැ­ත්වීම ආරම්භ කර ඇත්තේ 1949 වස­රේ­දීය. එතැන් පටන් මේ දක්වාම දාන­ප­ති­යන්ගේ හා ප්‍රදේ­ශ­වා­සීන්ගේ උදව් උප­කාර ඇතිව ගනේ­වත්ත දේවා­ලයේ ඇසළ පෙර­හරක් හා මඩු මංගල්‍යක් අති උත්ක­ර්ෂ­වත් අයු­රින් පැවැත්වීම සිදු කෙරේ.
