De SS-Prinz Eugen – de barbaarse Waffen-SS-divisie op de Balkan

De 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" was een militaire eenheid van de Waffen-SS, opgericht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De divisie werd in 1941 opgericht en bestond hoofdzakelijk uit vrijwilligers van etnisch Duitse afkomst uit de Balkanregio, waaronder Servië, Kroatië en andere gebieden. De naam "Prinz Eugen" was ter ere van Prins Eugen van Savoye, een 18e-eeuwse Oostenrijkse veldheer. Tijdens de oorlog was de Prinz Eugen-divisie betrokken bij gevechten op verschillende fronten, waaronder de Balkan. Ze namen deel aan operaties tegen partizanen en Sovjet-troepen. Helaas staat de divisie ook bekend om de betrokkenheid bij gruweldaden tegen burgers en oorlogsmisdaden, zoals de beruchte vernietiging van dorpen en executies van niet-strijdende burgers.
