Gretsch Drums, The Legacy of “That Great Gretsch Sound” Oral History Interviews
Episode 6, Elvin Jones, recorded March12, 1995
Elvin Jones, "Thank you for this wonderful walk through the legacy of 'That Great Gretsch Sound.'"

The true legacy of Gretsch Drums was the great fraternity of Gretsch endorsers. Since the internet did not exist in the early 1990’s, my research for the Gretsch book involved periodicals, the San Francisco library and fortunately for me, interviews with some of the greatest drummers of all time. Though the audio quality suffers, there are some great moments. I’m sharing the recordings of those interviews as oral history. What was important for me during these interviews was to get the interviewee’s impression other Great Gretsch endorsers simply by my naming another endorser and letting them recollect. This way, I not only filled in the blanks of those Gretsch endorsers no longer with us at the time of the interview, but also in revealing much about the interviewees’ style and approach. With the death of Jimmie Cobb May 24, 2020, none of the Great Gretsch drummers from this era are with us.
