In this control engineering and control theory tutorial, we explain how to design a state-feedback control law such that the poles of the closed-loop system are placed at proper locations such that the desired overshoot and rise time characteristics of the transient response are achieved. We use the controllable canonical form to assign the poles. Also, we use an example to demonstrate this technique. The pole assignment is based on a prototype second-order system that is parametrized by the damping ratio and natural frequency. We also present MATLAB codes that simulate the closed-loop system.
