This is truly one of the most impressive formation displays ever seen by the TCS on PDA day, RAF Coningsby on the 18th May 2023. 60 years separate the Avro Lancaster PA474 of the BBMF and Typhoon FGR4 ZJ942 of 29 Squadron. It is the perfect tribute to remember those that served, fought bravely for freedom, those that were lost in combat and to not forget our serving crew today.
It is just as important to remember those serving today, just as it is to remember those that have served.
The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. There are only two airworthy Lancasters left in the world - 7,377 were built. Lancaster PA474 was built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory at Hawarden Airfield, Chester on 31 May 1945, just after VE day. The war in the Far East ended before she was deployed to be part of the Tiger Force. She did not take part in any hostilities.
The Typhoon FGR4 ZJ942 is flown by Flt Lt Matt Brighty, 2023 Typhoon display pilot. He flies with 29 squadron and his callsign is ANARCHY1. When the formation display is about to finish, both aircraft break and ANARCHY1 runs into the solo Typhoon display.
