Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has cast doubt on the prospect of a truce with Hamas as Washington continued to push for an agreement.

Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, was in Egypt on Tuesday, a day after a visit to Israel, during which he warned that time was running out for an agreement that would release hostages kidnapped by Hamas and end the war in Gaza.
