Technical Talk 4 on "Concrete Durability and Performance-based Mix Design for Concrete Structures" – Prof. Mike Otieno (WITS University)

Durability of concrete structures is of paramount interest and importance to engineers, clients, and asset managers alike. It is therefore a shared responsibility amongst all the stakeholders especially taking into account the increased number of concrete structures that do not meet the desired design life due to premature durability-related failures such as corrosion of the reinforcing steel. This talk will give a brief background on the fundamental principles of durability before shifting focus to durability of concrete structures, and conclude with the concept and implementation of performance-based durability design of concrete structures.

Mike Otieno is an Associate Professor and Head of School in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He holds a doctoral and a master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa, and a first-class honours bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. His research interests include concrete durability, service life prediction, steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures, and repair and rehabilitation of concrete structures.
