"Rosegarden Funeral of Nukes" Paint-Over 2024-08-26 - With only a few days left before we must vacate the Johnson Tattoo Studio location of 40 years on Ecorse Rd., one of my least favorite tasks is to paint-over the mural I painted on the front of the shop some 25 years ago; I called it "Rosegarden Funeral of Nukes" - tribute to a 1979 John Cale song that was famously covered by Bauhaus in 1980 (Links in comments section)... So, perhaps it is appropriate that I am "covering" it here with manure/fertilizer-colored paint; I initially rendered the rosy mushroom cloud w/ barbed-wire elements in purple home latex tones purchased from the discount racks at the a local hardware store's mismatch selection, and it held up great for over two decades! I start with a slideshow depicting what the painting looked like before, proceed to me applying paint over the mural and a glimpse of the disarray inside - then "after" slideshow shots to close.

The Johnson name has been in local tattooing for over 55 years; Johnson Tattoo has been in the same location for 40; I've tattooed and pierced a legion of cool folks here for over 25; It's the close of an era, I suppose, as I move to an office in my brother John's successful shop, Cherokee Creek Tattoo:
