In 1965, at an after-match party in Delhi, Bollywood star Sharmila Tagore met the young and charismatic Indian Cricket team captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, popularly known as Tiger. Despite their lack of familiarity with each other’s worlds—Sharmila not knowing much about cricket and Tiger having seen few of her films—there was an immediate connection. Tiger, already celebrated for his leadership as the captain of the Indian cricket team at just 21, was smitten by Sharmila’s charm. Their relationship began with a thoughtful gesture from Tiger, who sent Sharmila a five air conditioners along with his phone number, which marked the start of their enduring romance.

For four years, Tiger courted Sharmila with roses and letters, demonstrating his deep affection. His dedication was rewarded when Sharmila finally agreed to marry him, after he fulfilled a playful challenge: hitting three consecutive sixes in a match. Tiger’s love and commitment were further exemplified when he proposed to Sharmila in Paris, and despite the challenges they faced—family objections and societal norms—they married on 27 December 1968. The union, blending the Tagore family’s Bengali heritage with Tiger’s Muslim background, was a landmark event, and they went on to have three children: Saif Ali Khan, Saba Ali Khan, and Soha Ali Khan.

Sharmila continued her acting career even after marriage, defying the norm of women leaving their professions post-wedding. Their marriage was one of India’s most talked-about unions of the time. Sadly, Tiger Pataudi passed away in 2011, but their fairytale romance remains a symbol of love transcending societal expectations.
