Carol and Reggie Sumner, high school sweethearts from Charleston, South Carolina, planned to marry after Reggie’s military service. However, their relationship was tested when Reggie was deployed to Vietnam. After losing contact, Carol moved on, marrying Richard Alford and having a daughter, Ronda. Her second marriage was troubled, and in 1987, Richard shot Carol in front of their daughter before taking his own life. Carol survived but was left with severe injuries and eventually lost her job and faced cancer.

Reggie, severely wounded in Vietnam, returned home and lost touch with Carol. He lived alone after his marriage ended. In 2000, Reggie and Carol reconnected after decades apart and married, settling in Florida. In June 2005, Carol’s daughter Rhonda became worried when she could not reach her mother and stepfather. Rhonda discovered their home abandoned and contacted the police.

The investigation revealed that Tiffany Cole, a young woman whom Carol had helped in the past, was involved in their disappearance. Tiffany, her boyfriend Michael Jackson, and accomplices Bruce Kent Nixon and Alan Lindell Wade had planned and executed the robbery and murder of Carol and Reggie. The group, seeking the couple's savings, kidnapped them, forced them into the trunk of their car, and buried them alive.

The police investigation led to the arrest of the perpetrators. Evidence and confessions led to their convictions. Bruce Kent Nixon cooperated and was sentenced to life in prison, while Michael Jackson, Tiffany Cole, and Alan Lindell Wade received the death penalty. Appeals were denied, and the sentences were upheld.
