Article 370 of the Indian Constitution under Part XXI empowered the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir to have its own constitution. It granted autonomous status to J&K. It also restricted Parliament’s legislative powers in respect of J&K.

Article 35A, incorporated into the Constitution in 1954, provided special rights and privileges to the citizens of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Article 35A gave the Jammu & Kashmir Legislature full discretionary power to decide who the ‘permanent residents’ of the state were and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.

In 2019, article 370 and 35A were abrogated and subsequently, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which would have a legislature, and Ladakh, which would be without a legislature.
