CHAPTER 4: PRESSURE VESSEL

FORMULAS (0:28 - 12:15)

QUESTIONS:
1. A cylindrical tank with 10 inches inside diameter contains oxygen gas at 2,500 psi. Calculate the required wall thickness (in mm) under stress of 28,000 psi. (12:16 - 17:24)

2. Design a vertical steel cylindrical water tank 30 meters in diameter and 45 meters high. Consider the pressure variation in the water to follow a straight line from the edge of the top to the center of the bottom. The allowable stress is 120 MPa. Find the thickness of the steel plate required.
(17:25 - 23:59)

3. Determine the bursting steam pressure of a spherical steel shell with diameter of 10 inches and made of ¼ thick steel plate. The joint efficiency is at 70% and the tensile strength is 60 ksi.
(24:00 - 26:45)

4. What is the longitudinal stress in a water pipe, which is 8 inches in diameter and 0.25 inches thick if it is carrying a fluid at a pressure of 200 psi? (26:46 - 29:43)

5. A Boiler tubes with diameter of 50 mm (ID) are used in handling 20 MPa of steam. Determine the thickness of tubes necessary for an allowable stress of 80 MPa. (29:44 - 34:18)

6. A cylindrical having an internal diameter of 20” and an external diameter of 36” is subjected to an internal pressure of 10,000 psi and an external pressure of 2,000 psi. Determine the tangential stress at the inner and outer surface of the cylinder. (34:19 - 44:37)
