1997年11月30日の吉祥寺シルバーエレファントでのライブ映像。「Out-And-Out」の収録曲ですが、ライブでの演奏頻度は高くないものの、実は「隠れた名曲」との呼び声高いのがコレ。98年にMuseaから発売されたコンピレーションCD「Le Meilleur Du Rock Progressif Japonais」(仏和訳「日本のプログレッシブロックの概要」)には、Side Stepsを代表する1曲としてこの曲が収録されています。選曲はMusea側で当時はその意図がよく分からなかったのですが、今思えば全くの慧眼でした。このライブは「Out-And-Out」発売記念ライブということで、晴れてこの曲もライブ演奏をしていますが、実際には諸事情でライブ当日にCD発売は間に合わないというハプニングも(笑。しかし、この曲はCDで聴くのとライブを観るのとでは最も違いが分かる曲。というのも、ベースが全編でタッピングにてコードを弾いているのです。イントロからシンセのように聞こえるは全てベースです。なぜこのアレンジになったのか今をもって全く不明ですが、EWIブレスコントローラーを吹くキーボードがベンド等で両手を使えるようにするため？だったのか…。さらにはドラムレス。電子パッドにてパーカッション音色を叩くという具合で、Side Stepsの曲の中ではかなり異色な存在です。そのなかでサラリとはいる2-3クラーベ。思わずラテン・リズムが入るというのはSide Stepsの特徴の一つでもあります。通常の演奏との差分が大きかったためか、もしくは他の曲とのダイナミクスの落差が大きかったためか、曲が終わってもお客さまからの拍手は皆無…。お客さまは皆、拍手のタイミングを逸して呆然としている状態にて、この曲のスゴさが際立ちます(笑。このライブ、映像をよく見ると珍しくも衣装コーディネートがされており、右2名が赤、左2名が黄色。しかも光沢から識別するに長袖コーデュロイ・シャツを着ていますが、全く記憶なし。服はタンスの奥にもありません。きっと同時に調達したものとおもいますが、11月とはいえ、室内で演奏するにはあまりに暑すぎる衣装なのが気になります。さらに赤の衣装は意図せずYMO(共産アカ)に錯覚します(人民服ではありませんが)。

This is a live performance video from November 30, 1997, at the Kichijoji Silver Elephant. The song is included in the "Out-And-Out" album, but despite not being frequently performed live, it is highly regarded as a "hidden gem." In 1998, the song was included in the compilation CD "Le Meilleur Du Rock Progressif Japonais" (translated as "The Best of Japanese Progressive Rock"), released by Musea. At the time, we didn't fully understand Musea's choice, but in hindsight, it was truly perceptive. This concert was the "Out-And-Out" release celebration live, and we proudly performed this song live. However, due to various circumstances, the CD was not released in time for the live performance :-). This song has the most noticeable difference between listening to the CD and watching the live performance. The reason is that the bass plays chords using tapping throughout the entire song. Everything that sounds like a synthesizer from the intro is actually the bass. Even now, the reason for this arrangement is completely unclear, but perhaps it was to allow the keyboard player, who uses an EWI breath controller, to use both hands for bends and other effects? Moreover, there are no drums. Instead, percussion sounds are played on electronic pads, making this a very unique piece among Side Steps' songs. Within this, there is a subtle 2-3 clave rhythm. The occasional Latin rhythm is one of Side Steps' characteristics. Perhaps because the difference from the usual performance was so significant, or because the dynamic range was so vast compared to other songs, there was no applause from the audience after the song ended. The audience seemed to be stunned, missing the timing to clap, which highlights the song's impact :-). If you look closely at this live video, you'll notice the unusual coordinated outfits, with two members on the right wearing red and two on the left wearing yellow. They are wearing long-sleeve corduroy shirts with a sheen, which we don't recall owning and cannot find in our wardrobes. We must have procured them all at the same time, but despite being November, it seems too hot to perform indoors in these outfits. Additionally, the red outfits unintentionally give off a YMO (Communist Red) vibe (though they're not People's Uniforms).
