Tarikh is a daily Hindi programme in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and Incidents. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Tata Memorial Hospital, a leading cancer treatment and research centre in India. It is located in Mumbai and was established in 1941. The hospital was constructed in memory of Sir Dorabji Tata and her wife Meherbai Tata. Dorabji was son of Jamsetji Tata, a philanthropist and industrialist once chairperson of tata Group


The idea of setting up a cancer hospital in Mumbai was first proposed by Sir Dorabji Tata, in 1932. As Meherbai died due to Leukaemia, Tata believed that there was a need for a dedicated cancer hospital in India, and the Tatas decided to take up the cause.


The construction of Tata Memorial Hospital began in 1939, and the hospital was inaugurated by Sir Homi Mody, the Governor of Bombay, on February 28, 1941. The hospital initially had 100 beds, and its main focus was on treating cancer patients.


Over the years, Tata Memorial Hospital has grown into a major cancer treatment and research centre, with a capacity of more than 700 beds. The hospital has a team of highly qualified doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who provide comprehensive cancer care to patients.
