THE WOMAN IN WHITE by Wilkie Collins Ch 1 - 3: Walter Hartright and Professor Pesca

Illustrated reading: This book is the best! It is considered to be the first of it's kind as a detective novel, at the same time, The Woman in White has the sensational elements that made for popular reading of its day (and is still popular for many).
The story is told a little like a relay race, where as soon as there is a new character who is more knowledgeable about the details of the unfolding tale, that person relates what happens next. This way no important detail escapes our knowledge.
In the opening three chapters we meet Walter Hartright - the first in a series of narrators. We learn a little about his family and importantly we meet the humorous Professor Pesca who is bursting with news of an occurence that will change the course of Hartright's life.
