Let's talk about bones and corsets again! This is always a popular question I get: what kind of boning and when? And a lot of it boils down to personal preference.

There are a lot of people out there that swear by only using spiral steel, while others love themselves plastic boning or synthetic whalebone (which is also plastic!)
personally I really love to mix my materials, I love spiral steel for areas that curve because it will always spring back, while flat steel has a greater resistance and makes a great choice for lacing panels or front flat areas!!

Of course you can't forget plastic boning, which comes in different sizes (usually by mm) and different weights. Plastic and synthetic whalebone is a popular choice for some Victorian and Edwardian historical costuming corsets bc of its flexibility! It's cheaper than steel, and way easier to cut and shape, making it a good choice!

Zip ties and cable ties can sometimes double as plastic and synthetic whalebone, and are great when you have a tight budget and fancier more expensive materials are out of reach for you! They too come in different sizes and weights, and I have used them in boned bodices and costumes and it works great!

Ridgeline is the kind of boning you once would fine at Jo-Ann's and is a good option when you want a boned piece but it's not as important as say a full corset. It's great for 'laying flat' parts of clothing that are fickle: ie gaping pants, necklines, etc. I use it too in bodices when I want something to look nice, and I have seen some people use it to build 'bust cages' and structural shapes!

Each type of boning you choose has a place in sewing and I hope this video and this caption helps you recognize the importance and application for each type!
