Stylish and functional: at least that’s how I look at it. I don’t have the exact date waistband tape began becoming a part of corsetry but it was around the 16th century, when Catherine de Medici first started to ‘waist train’ or what we now know as tight lacing. It wasn’t popular then, and faded into obscurity for a few hundred years until tailors realized it also played an important role in design: dispersing the tension on the seams evenly, all the way around the body. (Think like pant/skirt waist bands!) This was not only more comfortable for the wearer (think of like modern day compression garments, how they cover a bigger area of your body not just the small, wounded area) but it also helped with longevity for those who wore corsets everyday all day, doing all kinds of labor in them! . Nowadays waist tape is saved for the most couture of corsets, or added as a decorative piece, but the function is still there: more comfort, longer longevity.
