"The urban code - You're in a great historic city."

In the past, humans depended only on the resources around them to build their buildings. For example, the people of Najd, in middle of Saudi Arabia, used mud to build their homes. As for the regions of Asir mountains, southwest of Saudi Arabia, rocks were the main element in many of their buildings.

The designs reflected the needs of each area very accurately. For example, the windows of Najd mud buildings are often very small. That's because it is a hot desert area which means you need to avoid the sun.

However, in rainy areas, buildings are reinforced by solid panels for protection from the effect of rain, and so on.

The construction boom and globalization have connected us to the world which influenced us in various ways. Construction in various regions has become reliant on the fastest and easiest of methods. This resulted in a concrete onslaught across the kingdom.

So, we resorted to non-Saudi architects in order to keep up with the construction boom as it was beyond our capacity to manage it alone.

Most of the buildings in the cities and villages of the Kingdom turned into modern buildings within a short time. This was good, but the identities of those cities paid a heavy price with many losing their unique character. They became duplicates of each other.

That heavy price was a topic of discussion between Prince Mohammed and the engineer Ibrahim Al-Sultan who's a consultant at the Royal Court and Head of the Development Bodies Support Center.
