MEGAN ROONEY - Flyer and the Seed

Megan Rooney is a Canadian artist born in 1985 who practices poetry, sculpture and performance but is best known for her murals such as those created at the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. She presents Flyer and the Seed at the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery ‪@galerieropac‬ in Paris until April 22, 2023.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, she grew up in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and Canada in Toronto. She currently lives and works in London where she graduated from the prestigious Goldsmiths University of London.

Characterized by bright colors and energetic movement, Megan Rooney's art is deeply influenced by her experiences, from her childhood in her mother's gardens to urban London. Her work is a balance between abstraction and figuration and revolves around the body as a container for the feelings she expresses in artistic language.

"Flyer and the Seed" is Megan Rooney's first solo exhibition in France. The exhibition features new works on canvas in her signature woman-sized format, as well as a monumental work on canvas reminiscent of her murals. Her paintings are constructed through an accumulation of layers, alternating between strokes of gestural paint and areas where the color has been sanded or rubbed off. Each painting has its own desire and will, becoming like a group of characters shaped in part by the artist and in part by the paint itself.

For Rooney, "all painting is about telling stories." As a form of marking, her practice allows her to connect "to the oldest parts of humanity." Storytelling is for her "a central part of the human condition." It is the desire to leave a trace, to make a mark, to say I was there." The frequent use of line in the paintings in the exhibition seems to reference this elemental desire, while recalling her early experiments with printmaking. The line also represents a further expansion of the artist's visual vocabulary.

Megan Rooney has an atmospheric treatment of painting; she is influenced by her memories, the seasons, the people and the moods she encounters on a daily basis on the streets of London. "One spends one's life as a painter developing a relationship with color, and then testing the limits of that relationship." Color is radical, it is ever changing - it can submit to you as well as betray you. It always seduces, it always excites, but "you cannot fake time on this surface."
