SEAN SCULLY 2/3 - The Art of Colliding Brutality and Philosophy

Описание к видео SEAN SCULLY 2/3 - The Art of Colliding Brutality and Philosophy

At the age of 17 Sean Scully discovered blues music. Drawn to the simplicity and structure of the blues, he found a connection between the raw emotion of the music and the expression he wanted to achieve in his paintings. Throughout his career, Scully's art has maintained this foundation of simplicity and restraint, akin to the blues on an acoustic guitar.

Scully's mind awakened to broader intellectual pursuits. He delved into the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and explored existentialist ideas that pondered the complexities of human existence. Alongside literature and philosophy, he immersed himself in serious music, particularly Kodály's cello sonata, which left a profound impact on him and fueled his desire to create paintings with emotional depth and intensity.

As Scully's journey continued, he drew inspiration from various sources, particularly French Impressionists and post-Impressionists. Painters like Manet, Pissarro, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Paul Klee became significant influences on his art. Their works resonated with him deeply, and he sought to capture their essence in his own creations.

Scully's artistic exploration extended beyond Europe as he ventured to Morocco, where the geometric patterns of the fabric opened his eyes to the harmonious interplay of shapes and colors.

Mexico also left a significant impact on Sean Scully's artistic journey. Ancient civilizations like the Mayan, Olmec, Toltec, and Aztec represented a complex dance of culture, history, and identity, mirroring the complexity he found within himself and his art. In Mexico, he discovered a country that encapsulated both brutality and refinement, much like his own philosophical and artistic inclinations.

As Scully's art evolved, it reflected his personal growth and experiences. After experiencing personal loss, the death of his son Paul, the color palette in his work darkened significantly, reflecting the depths of emotion he was navigating. However, as time passed, the colors in his paintings lightened, signifying a desire to find positive ways to express himself and connect with the world.

Scully's art developed into something more assertive and powerful. He sought to communicate a sense of hope and resilience rather than solely evoking melancholy or despair.
In essence, Sean Scully's artistic path has been an exploration of emotions, influences, and self-discovery. From the simplicity of the blues to the complexities of philosophy and cultural encounters, each facet of his life has left a mark on his art.
