PRO TIPS, TECHNIQUES and composite secrets. How to do an opaque resin pigment fade on an asymmetrical fish surfboard! This is part 1, the laminating process of this little gem. I'm using PUPE resin with pigment to create a colour fade, a reverse cut-lap technique, custom Glass-on fins and warp-weave layup for superior strength. The shape is a little hand-shape I mowed out a while back. At first I wasn't happy with it but after coming back to it with fresh eyes we fell in love! An asym designed for a goofy footer with the shorter rail & twin fin on the heel side and the longer rail and quad fin pair on the toe.

This lam is done deck first contrary to the typical bottom first method in order to to keep an opaque cut lap visible on the deck. Traditionally a board is glassed bottom first but there really isn't any specific disadvantages to doing it the other way. Either works fine depending on the effect you desire in the final aesthetic.

Warp weave refers to the cloth being skewed so as to run diagonally across the board. With two layers in opposing directions the board has fibres running in a multitude of directions rather than just two. This creates a stiffer, stronger laminate. Consider the bi-axial layer commonly found in epoxy "tech" layups like Hayden's Future flex... Warp is easy to do and no fancy and expensive composite weaves are necessary.
