we are going to learn about a colourful bird known as the Temminck’s Tragopan. The Temminck's tragopan is an exceptionally colorful elegant bird with beautiful feathers, with a non-flighty nature. You may be able to tell by looking at the Temminck’s Tragopan that they are a member of the pheasant family and probably the most beautiful pheasant species roaming the earth The Temminck's is one of 5 species of Tragopan pheasant. It is a medium sized pheasant which lives at high altitudes in the Eastern Himalayas, Southern Tibet, Myanmar and some surrounding areas. these tragopans prefer mountain and forest areas and high hilly areas for cold temperatures—they nest and breed on trees
The males are mostly a reddish-orange colour with the abdomen being brighter than their rump with white spots. the fluorescent blue face that always grabs the attention. Tragopans are generally called horned pheasants as the males possess two bright-colored fleshy horns crowned on their heads. These stand straight during mating as an act of courtship display. Male Temminck’s tragopans are easily noticeable due to the throat wattle under the chin known as the lappet. however, this it is usually tucked away unless he is trying to impress a female friend. This blue patch is surrounded with black feathers. During mating it is expanded and a range of red markings running down either side can be seen. Like many other birds, the female tends to be a little more boring than their male counterpart. The colouring of the female is typically a dull brownish-grey with black marks.
the male Temminck’s Tragopan will use a decorative throat wattle and shaking this to show off for the ladies but it doesn’t stop there. This bird actually has a whole dance routine and surprisingly, they are much better dancers During courtship he will also make a loud, booming moan. If he is successful in obtaining this then the female will initiate mating. after mating, the female lays three to five eggs. The nests are built on trees, 20 ft elevation from the ground, and made of sticks and twigs material. The incubation period lasts for 28 days. Two days after hatching, the chicks can fly but stay with their mother for a whole year.
The tragopan diet mainly consists of herbs, plants, berries, grass. Their diet also includes insects.

The lifespan of tragopans can be for a period of 18 to 20 years in the wild and may extend in captivity. A truly wonderful bird all round.
