Master Bloom's Taxonomy: Factual, Conceptual, Procedural & Metacognitive

There are four types of knowledge in Bloom's Taxonomy: factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive. Each type of knowledge has its own characteristics, objectives, and examples. The purpose of this essay is to explore each type of knowledge, its cognitive demands, and suggest examples of how educators can use this framework to promote deeper learning.

Factual Knowledge

Factual knowledge is the most basic type of knowledge, which involves the recall of information. This type of knowledge is essential in the acquisition of new knowledge and the development of more complex thinking skills. Factual knowledge includes terms, concepts, and details. Bloom's taxonomy, therefore, categorized it as the lowest level of critical thinking.

Objectives of Factual Knowledge

The basic objectives of factual knowledge are:

Recall: The ability to recall information
Recognition: The ability to recognize information in a given context.
Examples of Factual Knowledge

Here are some examples of factual knowledge:

Memorizing historical events and dates e.g., American Independence Day, July 4, 1776.
Reciting multiplication tables.
Memorizing scientific formulas and equations.
Identifying the components of cells or atoms.
Learning the meaning of words by associating them with pictures or context.
Conceptual Knowledge

Conceptual knowledge relates to how students perceive, understand and organize information. This type of knowledge helps establish how pieces of data are related. Students use conceptual knowledge to differentiate between, analyze, and interpret data. According to Bloom's taxonomy, conceptual knowledge occupies a higher position than factual knowledge and deals with more complex terms, concepts, and interrelationships presented between terms and concepts.

Objectives of Conceptual Knowledge

The main objectives of conceptual knowledge are:

Understanding: The ability to comprehend the relationship between concepts
Examination: The ability to distinguish, compare, and evaluate information.
Examples of Conceptual Knowledge

Here are some examples of conceptual knowledge:

Explaining the causes of the Great Depression.
Differentiating between an acid and a base.
Comparing and contrasting the beliefs of different religions.
Identifying and explaining the laws of physics.
Analyzing a novel's plot, character development, and theme.
Procedural Knowledge

Procedural knowledge relates to learning procedures or processes for completing tasks or expressing or demonstrating knowledge. The use of a set of procedures or skill-sets to complete tasks is fundamental to learning procedural knowledge. The students, while learning procedural knowledge, should be able to perform required procedures or solve problems using algorithms, formulas, methods, and techniques that have been trained and become automatic.

Objectives of Procedural Knowledge

The main objectives of procedural knowledge include:

Application: The ability to apply knowledge
Execution: The ability to perform specific tasks.
Examples of Procedural Knowledge

Here are some examples of procedural knowledge:
