Basic Kick Shield holding can be another invaluable skill for coaches, fighters & personal trainers.

Here are some quick tips to improve your Kick Shield holding technique.

Straight Techniques (Punches, Front Kicks, Side Kicks, Etc.)
------------------------------------------------------------
Hold the Shield with one hand on top and the other underneath.
Keep the Shield securely against the chest.
Keep Shield away from the chin at all times.
Small, sharp breaths out if possible when strikes hit the Shield.
Try to keep a basic fighting stance throughout. (like a rectangle)

Outside Leg Kicks (Low Roundhouse Kicks, etc.)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Start by checking which of the striker's legs is at the rear.
(Easier kick for beginner striker to utilise)
Whichever leg the striker has back, place your leg in front.
For example: (Strikers right leg is back, Shield holders left leg stays in-front.)
Use the opposite hand to the forward leg and grip your hand on the top handle.
Place the shield against the outside of the quad, keeping the top of the shield at approximately hip height.
Place the other hand or forearm on top of the Shield to secure the Shield firmly.
Keep the shield at an outward facing 45-degree angle.
As the kick comes, give a small amount of resistance by slightly bending your knee towards the strike. (If this becomes painful, you may want to use a thicker shield.)

Round Kicks To The Body (Roundhouse Kicks, etc.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hold the Shields top handles with both hands.
Keep the elbows close to your body and bent in behind the shield.
Keep the base of the Shield against the hip for added stability.
Give a little pushback as the strike hits the shield.
Keep a rectangular stance.

Knees
-----------------------------------------------------
Hold the Shield like you would for straight punches.
keep your knees bent at all times.
When leaning forward, turning the Shield slightly can keep it away from the chin.
Breathing out when strikes are coming is a must!
Knee strikes can still be dangerous, be cautious when asking beginners to grab and knee!
