Weclome for another installment of No Talk, All Tone and this week we are having a look at the Joyo Ultimate Drive. This pedal off the bat looks like a much different pedal than you'd expect, from the graphic alone you might be expecting the most extreme sounding distortion imaginable, but no, look closer and you'll get a clue as to what this is aiming at. The control layout gives this little obsessive clone a really full tone... Without spelling it out, I couldn't hint more clearly here, come on! Yeah, so it is based on a rather long running British drive in a box and you can coax some of those huge saturated drive tones out of this, yeah, but it does it all in a very unrefined way. This is in part down to the use of the wrong components in the circuit, switching a certain pot value for one with a different value and taper, leading to controls just not being quite as refined as they could be and there being some very definitive "sweet spots" rather than a hugely useable range. The control to suffer from this the most would be the gain, which has a lovely soft crunch right at the bottom of the sweep, but very quickly and sharply ramps up to almost being at full drive at noon on the control. The tone control is only really useful after half way, due to the "definition" eq content just not being present at all below that. Don't get me wrong, there were some fun settings to play with on this and it got me riffing like a 70s metal boss, but even at this price point there are more refined choices, so unless you are handy with a soldering iron and aren't affraid to mod, this truly is a one trick pony.

The demo gear in this video is all run through Practical Patch cables, including instrument cables and patch cables. These are using some top-quality components, including Neutrik jacks and Van Damme cable and are hand-assembled and tested in the UK. After having off-the-shelf cables for years and suffering failures again and again, I bought some Practical Patch cables and have been happier than ever with them. They also don’t cost you the Earth, which some other hand made cable companies seem to do. If you want to find out more, head over to www.practicalpatch.co.uk to see what they have to offer.
