Описание к видео Traditional Dances by Bajau Suluk of Sabah

This performance consists of two traditional dances of the Bajau Suluk from the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia.

1) Tiula' Itum by Suluk Sandakan
Tiula' Itum is a captivating traditional dance of the Suluk people in Sabah, beautifully performed to the song "Tiyula Itum." The name refers to a rich, black soup that’s a hallmark of Suluk cuisine, darkened with burnt coconut and simmered with tender slices of beef, goat, or chicken, infused with the warm flavours of turmeric, lemongrass, and ginger. This iconic dish graces special occasions like weddings, infant hair-cutting ceremonies, and Hari Raya Aidilfitri open houses.

The song "Tiyula Itum," composed by Sabah artist Troy, is a masterful blend of lugu Suluk vocal traditions—deeply rooted in religious rites—merged with modern electronic synthesiser beats. The interwoven kulintangan and bamboo instruments add a layer of authenticity, creating a lush, dramatic soundscape that perfectly complements the graceful, sustained movements of Pangalay, the dance showcased in this performance.

2) Igal Panasang by Bajau Semporna
Igal Panasang is a traditional dance of the Bajau people in Semporna, Sabah, with deep roots in ancient religious and ceremonial rituals. Historically, this dance was more than just a performance—it was a powerful medium believed to heal illnesses, ward off misfortune, and remove bad luck. It was also thought to enhance daily activities like fishing, farming, and seaweed cultivation. During the dance, it was said that spirits would possess the dancer or patient, guiding them into a trance-like state (Panangsang).

Today, Igal Panasang is often showcased as a captivating performance, marked by the elegant and fluid movements typical of Igal-Igal. The dance is accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments like the kulintangan, gong, and gabang, and can be performed solo, in pairs, or as a group, offering a mesmerising display of cultural heritage.
