Tarikh Episode 638

In this episode Nikhil talks about The human soul weightage experiment.
In the early 20th century, Dr. Duncan MacDougall embarked on a peculiar scientific endeavor in an attempt to quantify the weight of the human soul. Convinced that the soul, if it existed, must have mass, MacDougall conducted experiments at Dorchester's Consumptives' Home, a hospital for late-stage tuberculosis patients. Tuberculosis, with its fatal outcome and minimal body movement during death, provided an ideal setting for MacDougall's unusual investigation.
Using a specially designed scale, MacDougall measured the weight of six dying patients at the moment of their demise. The results, as reported in 1907, suggested a sudden loss in weight ranging from 0.375 ounces to 1 ounce (10.6 to 28.3 grams) upon death. MacDougall theorized that this weight loss corresponded to the departing soul.
However, criticism arose due to the small sample size, inconsistent results, and methodological issues. Other attempts, such as a rancher's experiment on sheep in 2000, failed to provide conclusive evidence. The scientific community largely dismissed MacDougall's findings, leaving the weight of the human soul an uncharted territory in the realm of scientific inquiry. The question of the soul's existence and any potential weight remains, for now, within the domain of faith and philosophy rather than empirical science.
