The history of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE | Jane Austen’s most popular book | Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is arguably Jane Austen’s most popular book, but the story of how Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet made their way from her pen onto so many bookshelves is often less well known than the famous love story these two characters are a part of. In this video from History Calling, we look at the history of Pride and Prejudice. We’ll start with the question ‘when was Pride and Prejudice written’ as Darcy and Elizabeth (along with Jane Bennet, Mr Wickham, Mr Bingley, Mrs Bennet and the rest of the cast of characters) actually emerged from Austen’s brain many years before the rest of the world knew about them. We’ll also look at the alterations made to Jane Austen’s most famous book (some by her, some during the printing process), her apparently failed attempts to get it published in the 1790s and how it was eventually released. If you’ve ever wondered did people like Pride and Prejudice when it came out, this video will answer that question too, showing you some of the original 19th century reviews. Sadly, despite its immense popularity, the publication of Pride and Prejudice did not make Austen a rich woman and I will also share with you how much money she actually made from it. The video will conclude by looking at some of the other stories based on Pride and Prejudice (step forward Bridget Jones!) and some of the most famous movie and TV adaptations of the book to show how its history is continuing.

In the course of the video, you will hear about some of the key events in the life of Jane Austen and it will contain plot spoilers for the book, however it is not intended to be a plot analysis of Pride and Prejudice, or my review of it.
