Histories that aren’t yet recorded in books never-the-less leave their quiet footprint in built heritage which carries signatures of the human drama that has unfolded in and around built architecture. Today we will explore the history of Amristsar, a city deeply impacted by Partition, through the story told by its built heritage and the memories of its inhabitants.

Gurmeet S. Rai is a conservation architect and a heritage management specialist based in New Delhi. She established CRCI India Pvt Ltd in 1996, a leading firm in heritage practice in India. Since its inception CRCI has prepared cultural heritage conservation and management plans for many significant heritage sites including world heritage sites such as the Red Fort, New Delhi; Ellora Cave, Maharashtra) of national significance as well as those of regional at local levels for governments, private, bilateral and multilateral agencies. In 2021 she was appointed as heritage specialist for the conservation of the Parliament building in New Delhi. The work of CRCI has been in the states of Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir. The organization was presented with the Award of Distinction by UNESCO for two projects under the Asia Pacific Architectural Heritage Awards in the year 2002 and 2004. Gurmeet S. Rai has been on the jury of the Asia Pacific Architectural Heritage Awards of UNESCO for over 15 years and is currently a member of the Steering committee of TERRA 2022, the World Congress on Earthen Architectural Heritage, to be organised by Getty Conservation Institute in Santa Fe, USA. She also serves on several national advisory bodies. CRCI has undertaken international assignments in Nepal and Myanmar and has been an advisor to UNESCO in the heritage sector in several countries in South East Asia.
Raghu Ria started photography at age 23 in 1965. He joined The Statesman newspaper as their chief photographer (196 to 1976), and was then Picture Editor with Sunday--a weekly news magazine published from Calcutta (1977 to 1980)
In 1971, impressed by Rai’s exhibition at Gallery Delpire, Paris, the legendary photographer Henri Cartier Bresson nominated him to Magnum Photos, the world’s most prestigious photographers cooperative which Rai could start only in 1977. Rai took over as Picture Editor Visualiser-Photographer of India Today, India’s leading news magazine in its formative years. He worked on special issues and designs, contributing trailblazing picture essays on social, political and cultural themes of the decade (1982 to 1991)
He was awarded the ‘Padmashree’ in 1971 for the body of works he produced on Bangladesh refugees, the war and its surrender. His photos and essays have appeared in the world’s leading magazines and newspapers. Currently he lives in New Delhi with his wife, Gurmeet Rai, and is working on his 57th book.
