When normally soluble proteins form clumps and insoluble aggregate, this can cause disease. When it happens in the brain, it can cause for example Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
The protein clumps that we find in the brains of patients of such neurodegenerative diseases are typically in the form of long and straight fibres, called amyloid fibrils. I have devoted much of my career until now to finding out how such amyloid fibrils form and grow. In this lecture, I will present some of what we have learned about how the amyloid fibrils linked to Parkinson’s disease form, grow and multiply.
