8The Scholar Gipsy is a poem by Matthew Arnold. It was published in 'Poems' in the year 1853. This poem is based on a book by Joseph Glanville 'The Vanity of Dogmatizing', published in 1661.
In his story, Glanville talks of an Oxford student, who although intelligent was poor. He decides to leave the world and join a band of Gipsies. He wishes to learn their art of controlling other people's thoughts. He understands that for this mission, he must receive heavenly inspiration.

Although long gone, there are rumours that the Scholar Gipsy still exists.
So this poem 'The Scholar Gipsy' is a quest in search of Scholar Gipsy by the poet, in the countryside of England, where he might be or might not be alive.
