The Scholar Gipsy is a poem by Matthew Arnold. It was published in 'Poems' in the year 1853. This poem is based on a 17th century book by Joseph Glanville 'The Vanity of Dogmatizing'. In his story, Glanville talks of an Oxford student, who although intelligent was poor. He decides to leave the world and join a band of Gipsies. He wishes to learn their art of controlling other people's thoughts. He understands that for this mission, he must receive divine inspiration, and he is ready to forgo worldly pleasures for the same, having only one aim
