Walking Stick vs. Trekking Poles

What is better for hiking or the Camino: a walking stick or trekking poles? Let’s face it, the walking stick is a classic. Nothing says “pilgrim” like a sturdy wooden staff. Walking sticks alleviate some walking weight, help with balance, and are good for “leaning breaks” and fighting off wild beasts. On the downside, walking sticks are significantly heavier than poles and might easily be lifted 17,000 per day! Trekking poles don't have that classic pilgrim look - but neither does a water bottle (compared to a gourd) or high tech t-shirts compared to a cape. They are lighter and more easily stowed when not needed.
