(4K) VLAARDINGEN - CYCLING THROUGH THE BROEKPOLDER (The Netherlands) (Insta360 Ace Pro)

We fietsen door het Vlaardingse Broekpolderbos. Een gedeelte van het bos is afgeschermd en hier leven de Schotse Hooglanders die we dan ook zullen tegenkomen. Het is een mooi gebied gelegen aan de westkant van Vlaardingen en de Vlaardinger vaart.

De Broekpolder was ooit een veenweidepolder met een aantal melkveehouders. Het woord 'broek' (brouck) heeft betrekking op het oorspronkelijke veenmoeras op deze plek. Vlaardingen was in de jaren 50 een groeiende stad en er waren plannen om in de Broekpolder woningbouw mogelijk te maken. Hiervoor moest het gebied eerst opgehoogd worden. Dat gebeurde tussen 1958 en 1976 met baggerspecie. Later bleek deze grondlaag te veel verontreinigd te zijn om hier een woonwijk te kunnen realiseren. Woningbouw was daarmee van de baan.
Het gebied kreeg daarna een groene inrichting. Het werd gedeeltelijk beplant met productiebos en voor een ander deel deed de natuur haar eigen werk. De polder kreeg daarmee een nieuw leven als natuur- en recreatiegebied en groeide uit tot populaire bestemming voor rust, sport en recreatie voor vele Vlaardingers en mensen uit de omgeving.

We cycle through the Vlaardingen Broekpolderbos. Part of the forest is protected and this is where the Scottish Highlanders live, which we will encounter. It is a beautiful area located on the west side of Vlaardingen and the Vlaardinger canal.

The Broekpolder was once a peat meadow polder with a number of dairy farmers. The word 'broek' (brouck) refers to the original peat swamp at this location. Vlaardingen was a growing city in the 1950s and there were plans to make housing construction possible in the Broekpolder. To achieve this, the area first had to be raised. This happened between 1958 and 1976 with dredged material. Later it turned out that this soil layer was too contaminated to realize a residential area here. Housing construction was therefore out of the question.
The area was then given a green design. It was partly planted with production forest and for another part nature did its own work. The polder was thus given a new life as a nature and recreation area and grew into a popular destination for rest, sports and recreation for many Vlaardingen residents and people from the area.
