Hinoki – or chamaecypris obtusa with its botanical name – is a slow-growing conifer bush or tree from the Cypressaceae genus and can reach - as a tree - 40 m in height. With its amazing resilience against decay, the wood of the Hinoki tree has been used to build temples and shrines across Japan already in ancient times. In Japan, the Hinoki Cypress originates from the islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. It grows in valleys and on slopes, volcanic soils, and stony ground and prefers a cold, damp climate. It can tolerate extremely cold temperatures of more than minus -20C. and forms one of the prettiest forests of mountains in Japan.
