The soldiers have to do exercises at immense heights and critically low temperatures in snow filled mountains to acclimatize themselves. It takes a lot of determination to walk with heavy Military Carbon Scarpa shoes on high altitudes. These shoes weigh approximately 4 kgs and have sharp metal blades that can severely injure the Jawans if they are not careful. Any cut with the crampon can result in 2-3 stitches on the leg. At glaciated terrain, it takes a lot of time to heal that cut.

Some of the highest battlefields like Siachen can be unforgiving even for the toughest soldiers; where low oxygen level and sub-zero temperatures make it one of the most hostile places to live in, let alone fight. At HAWS Gulmarg which is situated close to 9,000 feet above sea level, Indian Army men train to survive and fight in the world’s highest battleground at 20,000 feet.
