Mount Hood is located in Oregon and is the fourth highest peak in the cascade range. The 1986 Mount Hood Disaster occurred in May 1986, when seven students and two staff members from Oregon Episcopal School perished while on a Mount Hood vacation. The children were taking part in a school-mandated adventure programme for sophomores. The incident is the second-deadliest alpine disaster in North American history, behind an avalanche that killed eleven people on Mount Rainier in 1981.

Helicopters rushed the victims to area hospitals, where doctors and medical staff attempted treatment. One survivor, Giles Thompson, had to have both legs amputated
