In the following video you can see where is located the Plank Shield in Dark Souls. This item is just at the entrance of the secret area of the Great Hollow.
So from the bonfire in Blighttown go left and you will find a hollow tree. In that tree there is a corpse with the shield. If you hit the wall you will find a secret chest with Twin Humanities and if you hit again the next wall then you will unlock the entrance to the Great Hollow.
This is the starting shield for the class deprived.
