Janet Foutty is the former Chair and CEO of Deloitte Consulting. Stephanie asks her how her days started while working at Deloitte and she explains. Janet traveled a lot while working sometimes 2-3 times per week. She said that she has traveled to 40-50 countries. China and India left the biggest impression on her as far as innovation and change are concerned. She also mentions that she found that the business problems are the same, but the cultural differences bled through to the business problems. She did note that the client service mindset is more different from country to country and, building depth of relationships is very different with lots of nuances.

Janet goes on to explain that consulting consists of problem solving and is an opportunity, but opportunities look different in growing markets. The cycle of maturity matters as well. Stephanie and Janet discuss cultural differences while doing business and the size of the Chinese market.

Janet also emphasizes why we should learn to work with diverse teams and different backgrounds. Then Stephanie and Janet move on to discuss the growth markets and they cover topics such as universal truths and discussion of leaders, what one may see across cultures, female and women in leadership and the difference in styles and expectations in different cultures.

Janet then moves on to the topic of breaking the cycle of sponsorship. How we tend to help people who look more like us instead of those who don’t. She also makes suggestions for young individuals to improve upon for working in any business.

Stephanie asks Janet what she would do differently if given the chance to do over her 20s. She explains with good advice.

Stephanie asks Janet how she manages technology and how she recommends other manage the overwhelming amount of information we receive. Janet then finishes up by explaining her routine now that she is retired from Deloitte.
