Geetgauni Katha - গীতগাউনি কথা - Documentary - Wedding Song -

'Muslim wedding song' is a dying but very rich folk art form of Bengal. Muslim women and girls from Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal used to perform these songs with 'Dhol' and 'Ghungru' in Muslim weddings. These songs are traditionally written and composed by ordinary village women. These songs are just not about wedding, but reflect thoughts of those ordinary women on various things like, love and desire, happiness and pain, child marriage, different sociopolitical issues etc. Those who perform these songs on wedding in Burdwan district are called "Geetgauni". And also called "Gitali".

The main purpose of making this documentary was to get a clear picture about the daily lives of the people connected with this art form. We tried to get an idea regarding their feelings and concerns about the slow disappearance of this industry and art form in particular. While documenting we came across incidents and obstacles the performers had to face in their social life for performing this art form. Stories of overcoming all these obstacles started to emerge and inspired us further.

মুসলিম বিয়ের গান লোকসংস্কৃতির এক সমৃদ্ধ ধারা।
পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্ধমান, বীরভূম, মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার মুসলিম মেয়েরা বিয়ের আসরে হাতে ঢোল এবং পায়ে ঘুঙুর বেঁধে আসর মাতাতেন। গ্রামের সাধারণ ঘরের মহিলাদের দারা সৃষ্ট এই গানে যেমন মুসলিম সমাজের আর্থসামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক চিত্র সুন্দরভাবে ধরা পরেছে তেমনি নরনারীর প্রেম-বিরহ, ব্যাথা- বেদনা, অভিমান, ঠাট্টা তামাশাও গান, আলকাপ এবং সং এর মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। বর্ধমান জেলাতে বিয়ের আসরে যারা এই গীত পরিবেশন করেন তাদের বলা হয় "গীতগাউনি", কোথাও আবার "গীতালিও" বলা হয়।

এই documentary-র প্রাথমিক উদ্যেশ্য ছিল, এই শিল্পের সাথে জুড়ে থাকা মানুষগুলোর দৈনন্দিন জীবনের সাথে পরিচিত হওয়া। আর এই শিল্পের আস্তে আস্তে হারিয়ে যাওয়া টাকে তাঁরা কিভাবে দেখছেন, সেটাও বোঝা। কিন্তু এর সাথে সাথেই নানান ঘটনার মধ্য দিয়ে ধরা পড়তে থাকল সমাজ জীবনের নানা বাঁধা বিঘ্নর কথা। ফুটে উঠতে থাকলো সেইসব বাঁধা অতিক্রম করে যাওয়ার চেষ্টার গল্পও।
