After the Watford debacle, Bill Shankly wiped the slate clean at Liverpool. Out went what remained of the sixties team and in came a series of new, younger players.

This had so far been a season of transition, rather than immediate success for these new men, but they had made it as far as the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, where they were to face emerging German side Bayern Munich.

One man who survived the cull was 21 year-old Alun Evans, although he had spent most of the season out injured. This was his first start after returning from injury.
