In this video, we are going to talk about the RUNWAY VISUAL RANGE (RVR).

The goal for today is to understand what the RVR is, why is so important, how do we use it during the Airline Operations and what is the difference between Runway Visual Range and Visibility.

The RVR is the distance, expressed in feet or meters, that you can see on board of your aircraft over the runway threshold.

The Runway Visual Range is used to determine the type of Operations, such us Low Visibility Operations, also to verify that the landing and the take-off minimums are met.

The RVR can be measured either by a person (old method) looking out from a vehicle on the runway threshold or by watching specific Airport reference points or can be calculated Automatically using specific equipment called Scatterometers that provide the exact Runway Visual Range to the Air Traffic Controllers.

The RVR is reported on the METAR, ATIS or you can ask it to the ATC.

Why is it so important? Having a precise Visibility report is extremely important when operating in Low Visibility Operations since few meters of RVR deference can make the difference between a diversion or land into the destination.

Not all airports have the equipment required for the Runway Visual Range measurement, it really depends on the Airport type of operations.

The vast majority of the commercial airports have the RVR read meters.
