Abandoned Cheltenham railways Dowdeswell Viaduct. I had almost given up hope of finding any signs of the existence of this viaduct, but once I had determined the actual location, I grew more confidant. Something that substantial had to leave a mark. Even so it was very hard to find the evidence.
Hard to believe that they went to the trouble of demolishing this huge structure, and then to remove all traces. Why would you do that, unless they needed the hardcore for something, the land has not been developed. I guess it saved on a certain amount of upkeep, you couldn’t risk it falling down given its proximity to the roads, and I guess it would be a magnet to young adventurers who could no doubt find ways to injure themselves. There is a costed proposal to reinstate this line including rebuilding this viaduct. Of course it will never happen, but it would be interesting to see how the design of the new compared to the old. A lot more utilitarian is my guess.
