After going to battle in the 1960s with the E-Type and W113 SL 'Pagoda', Jaguar and Mercedes fought again in the 1980s; the R107 SL made a splash in the 1970s with its handsome styling, safety and bombproof reliability, whereas Jaguar were slightly later with the AJ6-powered XJ-SC cabriolet, created by beheading an XJS coupe and having Aston Martin Tickford graft a soft-top and Triumph Stag-esque rollover bar on. One offered German solidity and Teutonic engineering excellence, the other British luxury, gorgeous looks and luxury, but which grand tourer is best as a classic today?
