राग भैरव - तुम जागो मोहन प्यारे | Tum Jaago mohan Pyare

Today's song is a an attempt to discover a small portin of the beauty that is Raag Bhairav. On the eve of Krishna Janmastami, I want to take you on the journey of Raag Bhairav - the base for the famous bandish, "Tum jaago Mohan Pyare".

In hindusthani classical music, surs are believed to be the vehicle to self discovery. Each sur has a place which can be reached from a particular direction. In raag Bhairav, its the komal rishabh (Re) and komal Dhaivat (dha) that take center stage.

In this video, I attempt to start from shadj (saa) and walk one step at a time... You can see which of the seven steps I have attempted with the green line.

Arriving at Shadj (sa) is an art which still illudes me, My favourite way to arrive at it is from komal re.

Komal Rishabh (re) is the defines this raag. It stands on its on and annouces itself with strong notes.

Gandhar (ga) provides the much needed softness after the strong rishabh and brings the morning mist with it

Then come madhyam (ma) and Pancham (pa) which I rush through...

The next main note is komal dhaivat (dha) almost as strong as Komal re, that balances both sides of the sargam

Nishaad (ni) is almost too weak and acts as pre-strp towards the bext octave shadj (varcha sa) . In classical music, this is the point of crescendo, final step. Sharpe note that completes the journey. In order to finish the circle, we complete the alaap by coming back to where we started, which is khalacha sa.

after this journey, jaago mohan pyare is like the necklace of pearls. all you need to do is to weave it together 😊
