Santosh Khade, 25, the son of sugarcane harvest labourers belonging to the Vanjari community, topped the nomadic tribes sub-category in the state civil service exams of 2021. A rare feat given his childhood and schooling in a highly impoverished family, his entry into the Maharashtra Public Services Commission (MPSC) finally ended his parents’ annual migration for the sugarcane harvest. The resident of a little village in Patoda taluka of Beed district in drought-prone Marathwada, Khade said the happiness he derived from ensuring his parents' liberation from sugarcane harvesting work far surpassed his later achievement of finishing 16th statewide in the MPSC exams.
